Correction to JADU Section of “How to Build an In-Law Unit in California”
Prior to 2020, the law required that the converted space for a junior accessory dwelling unit (JADU) include an existing bedroom. When I built a JADU at my house in Fremont, an existing bedroom had to be included in the converted space.
The new 2020 California ADU laws no longer requires the converted space to include an existing bedroom. The statement at the top of page 29 of How to Build an In-Law Unit in California – “Keep in mind that the law requires that the converted space includes an existing bedroom.” – is no longer applicable to JADUs.
